Juvenile Court Probation Officer

Duties

• Duties of the Probation Officer include, but are not limited to: Developing, coordinating, and enforcing the supervision and treatment of juveniles placed on probation and those placed in the court’s custody. Conduct pre-dispositional investigations and submit PDI’s or recommendations to the presiding Judge or Magistrate as ordered. Investigate and verify information provided by youth when appropriate.
• Enforce youth’s compliance with court orders.
• Prepare probation violations and/or violation of court orders.
• Conduct drug screens or monitor drug screening of youth.
• Testify in various court hearings.
• Facilitates service team meetings to prevent removal from the home and/or work towards reunification of youth and his or her family. Assists in the placement and management of youth in relative, foster, or residential care. 
• Utilize a wraparound service model to assess and identify client and family needs, linking children and families to appropriate systems, and promoting strength-based interventions.
• Maintains all case related and required paperwork in SACWIS including but not limited to family assessments, case plans, and activity logs in accordance with Child Welfare regulations and standards for those at risk of removal and/or removed from their home. 
• Formulate treatment plans with appropriate goals and objectives within the general conditions of probation. Development of case plans in conjunction with offenders to address high need areas and identify risk factors.
• Utilization of evidence-based supervision practices to facilitate behavioral changes.
• Prepares care agreements for youth in court custody, case plans, case reviews, and medication and education, social histories for all active cases. Maintains placement history and documentation for youth on caseload.
• Maintains supervision and face-to-face visits with all youth, facilitates family visitation, independent living, educational and behavioral health services for all youth. Regular meetings and contacts with youth in the office, field, and other community locations such as correctional and treatment facilities. 
• Develop a one-on-one supportive relationship with youth and family members.
• Completes other duties as assigned. 

 

Position requirements:

• Preference to work with children and families through a social work or casework lens instead of a traditional probation or law enforcement-centric methodology.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure of deadlines.
• Ability to work in a team environment, while also working independently.
• Demonstrated capacity to handle multiple tasks, projects and meet deadlines.
• Excellent organization and time management skills.
• Excellent writing, typing, verbal, communication, and computer literacy in word processing,Microsoft office, email, internet and excel spreadsheets.
• Knowledge of community resources with demonstrated experience working with youth, and anunderstanding of their values and belief systems.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive information. This position is regularly exposed to sensitive information and officers are required to keep any such information strictly confidential.
• Ability to develop strong relationships with diverse groups of citizens, who may have conflicting interests and opinions.  Ability to maintain a professional demeanor at all times.

Preferred qualifications:

• Minimum associate degree with at least two years of experience working with youth, family preservation, child welfare or reunification. Preferred bachelor’s degree fromaccredited educational institution in the field of social work, criminal justice, criminology, psychology, cognitive behavior therapy/counseling, or other applicable field of study.
• SACWIS experience. 
• Experience in restorative justice, offender services, or related field a plus.
• Experience with community service agencies.
• Experience supporting and managing offenders or individuals with mental health and/or substance abuse issues.
• Experience supporting and managing high risk populations.

Additional requirements:

Pre-employment screening required including employment reference, criminal background check, drug testing, and skills testing. Candidate will be required to successfully complete the Probation Officer Academy Training through Ohio Supreme Court Judicial College, SW CORE through ODJFS, and OYAS within the first year of employment. 

• All duties must be able to be performed upstairs and downstairs in the Probate and Juvenile Divisions of the Common Pleas Court, Ross County, Ohio.
