THRONE'S THOUGHTS: So, you want to join the Ross County business explosion? Here’s how!
Many of the brightest stars in Chillicothe and Ross County’s present day are the number of new businesses starting here each month. Specific data for Ross County isn’t available. Still, we know that there were more than 179,000 new business filings in Ohio, and February was a record month for those statistics in the history of the Buckeye State.
I am constantly amazed at the number of people willing to seize the opportunity to take their dreams to market in our community. Maybe you’re thinking of an idea, but you don’t know how to make it a reality. Here’s how to get started in Chillicothe:
- Choose a business structure. There are several types of business structures to choose from, such as sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company (LLC), or corporation. Each type of structure has its advantages and disadvantages, so it's important to choose the one that's right for your business. You may want to consult an attorney to make sure you file correctly.
- Choose a business name and get a business license. You must choose a unique business name and register it with the Ohio Secretary of State. You'll also need a business license from the city or county where you'll be operating your business.
- Get the necessary permits and insurance. Depending on the type of business you're starting, you may need to obtain certain permits and insurance. For example, you'll need a food handler's permit if you're selling food. And if you're hiring employees, you'll need to carry workers' compensation insurance. Pro tip: If you will occupy a space, you’ll need to get an occupancy permit from the building department.
- Set up your business finances. You'll need to open a business bank account and set up a system for tracking your income and expenses. You'll also need to get a business credit card to make purchases for your business.
- Get the word out about your business. Once you've covered all the legal and financial details, it's time to start marketing your business. There are a few ways to get the word out, such as online advertising, print advertising, and public relations.
- Provide excellent customer service. This is SO IMPORTANT! One of the best ways to keep your customers returning is to provide excellent customer service. This means being responsive to their needs, resolving issues quickly and efficiently, and going the extra mile to make them happy.
- Stay up to date on regulations. The business environment is constantly changing, so staying current on the latest regulations is important. This will help you avoid any fines or penalties.
- Get help when you need it. There are many resources available to help you start and grow your business. These resources can provide you with information, advice, and support. The Chamber, the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Piketon, The Economic and Community Development Institute (ECDI), and others are here to help.
And, as you contemplate those points, here are a few additional details to consider:
- Do your research. Before starting your business, it's important to research and understand the local market. This will help you make informed decisions about your business, such as where to locate it and what products or services to offer.
- Network with other businesses. Networking with other businesses in your area is a great way to get support and advice. You can also learn about new opportunities and find potential customers. The Chamber can help!
- Get involved in the community. Community involvement is a great way to build relationships and promote your business. You can volunteer your time, donate to local charities, or sponsor local events.
- Be patient. It takes time to build a successful business. Don't get discouraged if you don't see results overnight. Just keep working hard and stay focused on your goals.
There is no end to good ideas, and plenty of space in the Chillicothe and Ross County communities for great businesses. When are you going to start turning your dreams into reality?
