THRONE'S THOUGHTS: The gift of time is only as good as how we respect it
We've been given more time to figure out the future of papermaking in Chillicothe. What we do with it is important.
This week, a palpable sense of renewed hope is sweeping through Chillicothe, following the welcome news that the paper mill will continue operations past June. This victory, however, wasn't handed down – it was forged in the collective spirit and unwavering determination of the Chillicothe community.
For days, as uncertainty loomed over the fate of the mill and the over 800 jobs it sustains, a powerful narrative of unity unfolded. Neighbors spoke with neighbors, union representatives worked tirelessly, and local businesses voiced their deep concern. The understanding was clear: the closure of Pixelle would not just impact individual families; it would ripple through the very fabric of Chillicothe.
This shared understanding ignited a spark of collective action. While specific details of the agreement remain forthcoming, the palpable sense is that the community's voices—their concerns, commitment, and deep-rooted connection to the mill—played a significant role. Local leaders, alongside state and potentially federal entities, undoubtedly worked behind the scenes. Yet, the strength of their position was undeniably amplified by the unified front presented by the people of Chillicothe.
As I’ve said countless times, we’ve been given the gift of more time, which is a good thing. But it’s only as good as what we do with that time. How we respect that time and spend it wisely. Finding a new buyer requires hard work. The buzz of Friday will wear off - maybe it already has - but we have to find the strength to keep up the fight.
This isn't just about saving a mill; it's about preserving a way of life, securing futures, and reaffirming the power of community. The sigh of relief echoing through town is a testament to what can be achieved when people unite for a common cause. Chillicothe has shown that when its heart beats as one, it can indeed write its future. The story of the mill’s survival is a powerful chapter in the ongoing narrative of this resilient Ohio town.
