August is recognized nationwide as National Black Business Month, a time to amplify Black entrepreneurs' success and innovation. Americans can actively support economic growth and financial stability in black communities by purchasing goods and services from minority-owned businesses.

Carvel Simmons, a pioneer in the trucking industry, is passing the torch to a new generation. Simmons founded Trio Trucking Inc. in 1982 with just a $500 investment and a single tractor. He grew the company to over 100 employees through decades of hard work, providing regional trucking and rail services and local and short-haul distribution. He was also honored by the Chillicothe Ross Chamber of Commerce with a Special Recognition Award in 2022 for his contributions to entrepreneurship. 

Now at the helm is Simmons’ trusted protégé and step-daughter Tamara Paul, an experienced entrepreneur who has launched multiple companies over the years. As the new CEO, Paul is honored to continue the legacy of this historic Black-owned business.

“Receiving the torch from a trailblazing figure like Carvel is a true blessing,” says Paul. “I am ecstatic for the opportunity to uphold and expand upon the fantastic reputation of this company.”

Paul recognizes the importance of a thoughtful transition plan, especially for minority-owned businesses. “It’s so critical to find the right fit, have impeccable timing, make sure the values and culture of the company are preserved,” she explains. “Succession planning is just as important for customers as it is for the owner. Customers want to feel confident that the business will maintain the highest standards.”

As her top priority, Paul wants to reassure Trio’s long-time customers that the succession plan is active and on track. Trio Trucking Inc. aims to set an example for Black businesses nationwide, reminding them of proper planning for the future.

Paul concludes, “During this milestone month, we celebrate not just the achievements of Black business owners like Carvel Simmons, but also the potential of the next generation of minority entrepreneurs.”
